I’ve been using that laptop for 6 months, the battery life is horrible, so you cannot take it out anywhere and I did not. It became pretty much a desktop. But that’s not the end of the story.
After 4 months I started hearing a noise whenever I open it,but didn’t pay much attention and yesterday I opened it as normal and my hinge finally broke. After little research I found out that it’s well known issue with these laptops, and it’s described in thousands of comments. just google “lenovo y50 hinge problem”.
It’s definitely manufacturerdefect, but they won’t accept that – I called customer service but the technical representative said that they don’t have any issues with those laptops, so they won’t cover it.
I’m very disappointed and definitely will stay away from anything made by Lenovo. It’s not a cheap laptop to have such kind of issues.
But hey s*** happens at least they should be honest about their mistakes with customers who trusted them once, of course,if they care about their customers.

I’m glad I waited to review, because, honestly? I wouldn’t recommend this computer, or even this brand, to anyone at this point. While the computer itself runs just fine, the hardware has been steadily breaking with each passing day.
I initially decided on this computer because I had a thinkpad before this, which, while broken to the point that I couldn’t even use it by the time I was done with it, lasted me years, even when I got it secondhand, refurbished by IBM. When I was shopping for a new one, this laptop met most of my requirements, including the full keyboard and screen size.
The first issue I noticed was rather early on, shortly after I got it; A fan on the inside, for whatever reason, makes a sound like it’s being pressed on. It’s loud enough to get annoying if I don’t have headphones in. But it’s something I could ignore, for the most part.
But then, a few months ago, the right click just stopped working properly. I have to push down rather hard to get it to work, and sometimes even that doesn’t pan out, so I’ve been reduced to only the double-tap clicking method, or using a mouse. It makes clicking and dragging almost impossible.
Around the same time, the right side of the plastic that protects the hinges began popping out for no apparent reason. It get’s caught on the top right edge of the keyboard part, and when that happens, I have no choice but to force it open, and it makes an awful cracking sound. I’ve been fearing that it would snap part of the plastic protector, and sure enough, a bit of the plastic snapped off a few days ago, though I’ve had it taped in place to the best of my ability to limit how much the part could displace itself.
Yes.Taped. I am to the point that I’ve begun taping my $1000 laptop to try and keep it from falling apart. I’m afraid that the screen itself is going to start coming up. And I’m the sort of person that takes a LOT of care with my laptops. I’ve never dropped it, never pulled it open too forcefully (until it started breaking and forcing me to,) never grabbed it by the screen; I don’t even use the touch screen.
It’s just frustrating, because I do like the computer itself; It runs quickly, I’ve never had issues with malware, I like the full keyboard, and I even like the display. But I invested in this expecting it to last me a few years, and I’ll be lucky if I even make it one and half before some serious piece of hardware breaks for no reason. Seriously, just skip it. If you’re paying this much for a computer, get a better one.

I really like this computer until one time, the left hinge of the screen connection just completely came undone. It still worked, I just could not closer the laptop and therefore, could not transport it. I wondered what I must have done to cause this. Turns out, this is a very common issue that is caused in the factory production and when I called customer service to have the laptop repaired, they knew what it was and repaired it right away because it was under warranty… but they didn’t change anything about the assembly. You can see where this is going. I get the laptop back, and a few months later (by this point the warranty had passed), the top half of the screen turned a shade of green, and I could no longer see red colors in that half. It was another common issue, and they knew about it as soon as I described it. I called customer service and they could not fix it. They tried to "escalate my case." but it was not allowed. I lived with it by plugging the laptop into a monitor when I needed it for my design work. Mind you, this is the screen breaking that THEY fixed a short while ago. I was doing hardly anything to this laptop. Never dropped it, and kept it in a protective case.
Now it comes full circle; the left hinge fell apart again. I called customer service and they would not help me because they didn’t view it as a "factory issue," even though it clearly was judging by the fact that it happened twice after it was in the factory. They will not fix it, and I’ll have to buy a new laptop despite the fact that this one actually runs quite well. The laptop itself runs fine despite a lackluster battery life, but the faulty hardware has completely ruined my experience with this product. I rely on this laptop for my professional work, and it completely let me down.
If you care about having quality products and quality business transactions, DO NOT ever buy a Lenovo product. They are clearly a company with no class, and they should be ashamed that they let such a faulty product go out into the hands of a poor college student twice while they smugly denied any blame for their own issues. I’m a designer, and the designers at Lenovo were clearly not doing their jobs and should be fired. The customer service members were kind enough, they just clearly had terrible orders from their upper management who clearly have no connection to the quality of their product as long as schmucks like us keep buying them to avoid the high prices of an apple computer. Unbelievable.

It's a sturdy frame, which is nice because my kids use it a lot, and it doesn't feel like it's at any risk of cracking the screen or other kinds of damage. The battery life is not great -- it lasts only about 3 hours fully charged. The screen is beautiful, and the sound is great. It doesn't freeze up even when using it for games that take full advantage of its graphics cards.
The touch pad was very sensitive at first; and while you can adjust the settings, we mostly end up using this with an external mouse. The Logitech Gaming Mouse G300 is fantastic, extremely responsive and well worth it.
The only weakness, that slows it down somewhat, is the hard drive. It's a terabyte, but clocks at 5400 rpm. It takes a little longer on startup than some other systems I've used. We've been tempted to install an SSD drive, which would likely solve that problem.
It looks good. It's fairly lightweight and easy to lug around in a backpack. We did a lot of research, and at the time we bought it, this appeared to have the best gaming performance for a PC in its price range. We've been very happy with it.

Y510P 750M SLI config 8GB Ram 250GB intel extreme SSD
stylish design, red backlighting.
Great keybaord and screen.
Not too bad on weight
Speakers are awesome.
Front edge on the laptop feels sharp.
With SLI there can be problems.
THE CPU NOT ACTIVATING TURBO BOOST (biggest con if you couldn't tell ).
Does not come with a NGFF connector if you do not get the ssd cache(NGFF is the newer form of MSATA) If you want this get the laptop with an SSD cache.
Experience with laptops.
I buy and refurbish laptops of all kinds. I am coming from an M17x r4 gaming laptop with a 7970m.
I downgraded to this laptop as I never fully utilized the power of my 7970M as I really only play league of legends on my computer but I do alot of CPU intensive programs.
The laptop looks really nice and the keyboard is very nice with a spring behind every key, almost the feel of a mechanical keyboard. The sharp edges on the casing are noticable on the wrists when typing and playing games, this is my biggest flaw with the laptop.
The laptop came with an amazinly bright Matte screen which blew me away with the quality for the price.
The red backlighting is nice although I sometimes miss being able to change the color like on my M17x.
The speakers are very clear and crisp I was very impressed with them.
The exterior design is a nice carbon fiber like look with a nice looking lid with slight jet style curves on the top IE ASUS ROG. The lapop is a fingerprint and oil magnet.
The trackpad that everyone hates, I do not see any issues with it. Yes you must be use to the windows 8 gestures to like it but when you are it is great. I like it much more than my Alienware's trackpad.
The laptop performs wonderfully in all day to day tasks. Even without the SSD boot-up time was still acceptable. During CPU intensive programs like compiling and running Verilog programs through large test cases I am noticing the CPU is throttling back down to the 2.2GHZ instead of using the turbo boost feature it comes with. This is very dissapointing.
The graphics setup allows for most games to play nicely, the SLI 750's are very nice but with SLI there can be problems I have had some freezing but it is during the burn in of the graphics card. It has not happened in the last 2 nights of playing games which is a plus. Some programs do not recognize the dual 750's and run with only one gfx card.
3dMark is not recognizing the dual 750's and is giving me a score of 2200 for one card, I am updating to a newer beta driver now to see if this fixes the issue.
Edit: After updating the drivers it still did not work but upon further investigation SLI was turned off in the nvidia control panel after fixed i get over P4000 in Passmark and great gaming performance.
Battery life I can not account for as it has been plugged in as the dual cards only work when plugged in. You have to keep in mind this is a gaming laptop which means battery life will not be as good as an ultrabook or even a standard laptop as it has to run the 750M and this laptop does not have optimus to save battery.
Honestly the laptop runs much cooler than my alienware even though it hss two graphics cards. The laptop is always kept on a notebook cooler though just because i play on my lap and want the fans propped up. The cooler is not always plugged in becasue I feel it is not as needed as it was before.
I am happy with the laptop and will hopefully fix the 3dMark issues with driver updates.

Pros: GORGEOUS screen (I get comments all the time from jealous friends on how nice, sharp, and bright it is), soft keys (makes typing papers a breeze), and an all around fast machine.
Cons: Finger print magnet and poor trackpad. The case really does attract quite a few finger prints, but they come off quite easily with a soft cloth (I just use a cloth meant for eyeglasses and it works well). The trackpad is really lackluster, but I mainly use a mouse with the computer so it doesn't both me much, but if you mainly use a trackpad you might want to invest in something else.
I would highly recommend this computer. I use my computer very frequently, mainly for school and gaming, and this fits the bill. It has no problem running most games in the upper-quality settings. I don't play too intense games, but it lets me play LoL and Skyrim on max settings without a problem. Running 10+ tabs on a browser, iTunes, MS Word, and a slew of Adobe programs under load all at once and it never bats and eye. I use the always-on usb port more than I thought I would and it has turned out to be a nice extra feature. The speakers also are very nice for a laptop, although I do mainly use a standalone set of speakers. I would highly recommend this machine. The performance you get for the price is well worth the money.

I use CAD software on a regular basis and required a laptop that had sufficient processing power and graphics to run the software I need to use.
After a few days of comparing multiple laptops from MSI, Dell, HP, Sony etc I settled on Lenovo.
After a poor start with Amazon (this is not factored into my product rating) with shipping I finally got it. WOW! What a machine.
I have installed all the software I need to use and have opened a number of the extremely large and complicated assemblies in CAD. It has absolutely no problem running them.
It gets a little warm but no worse than any other laptop i have ever encountered.
My only issue (which doesn't bother me to much) is the battery life. 3 hours? That is pretty poor.
For the price and specs of this laptop you honestly cannot go wrong! Love it!
