Got the 3543 non-touch with windows 8.1 i3,4GB, 500GBHHD
Before turning on I replaced the hard drive with a 512GB Transcend SSD and upgraded the memory to 8GB
Removed secure boot and disabled PXE in BIOS
UPDATE! The Card reader, MEI, and Wifi Driver on Dell support site was not the Windows7 version even though it stated it was. I was able to get the Windows7 versions of these drivers from the previous model support site (Inspiron 3542).
Pros Cheap i3 5th Gen Quiet Fan
Cons: Touchpad: Cannot select multiple items with the mouse it is annoying going to try to fix this. I do not have the right click issue like other reviews said. UPDATE!: Was able to fix this by uninstalling the dell touchpad drivers and using the previous Inspiron 3542 touchpad driver.
Wifi Signal seems to be lower than my other laptops. If it doesn't improve I'm going to swap this out the 1704 dell wifi with a intel dual band centrino card. UPDATE! I ended up installing the Centrino WiFi card, performance seems a bit better. Available through amazon, just search Intel 6300.
Single Channel Memory (only 1 slot for memory) This can slow down performance.
SD Card slot only allows the card to stick halfway in.. So when a SD card is inserted it sticks out about a half inch out of the side of the laptop. Might not be a con for some people.
Summary: I bought this for someone that just needed web browsing. Hopefully it lasts. The last Dell they had lasted for almost 10 years.
Very Good product at this price point. I bought this for my father who is a light user. The i3 runs all the basic tasks- Heavy Browsing, Light stock market applications etc. pretty well Considering it doesnt come with a SSD, Boot time is still pretty short and the current battery life is good at ~7-8 hrs.
Out of the box the product had a minor issue, which I was able to fix. This isn't expected in an out of box product as it ruins the overall user-experience. [One of the reason why people pay for costlier apple products]. I would just say poor quality control. Average user would just return the product or just live with it.
Issue: The laptop was packed well and on removing from the sleeve looked good. However on turning it ON, I saw bright spot towards the right side of the screen. All the pixels in the area were working working fine - Some people might have just lived with it. Having an OCD, I just contacted amazon for replacement. However the replacement wasn't reaching me in time and I needed to drop this off to my dad when I was visiting him. I googled about pressure marks and planned to try and fix it myself. I cancelled the return and amazon provided me compensation to get this fixed. [+1 to Amazon for this]
I opened up the display, and unscrewed the LCD from the top cover. What I saw was a - "small lose screw sitting behind the lcd screen". This was pressing against the back of the LCD screen causing the bright spot on the display. I believe a case of a lost screw while assembling the laptop - and there, I found it! Once removed, the bright spot was gone.
This is my first laptop since getting a Dell Studio 1500 series back in 2009, which due to the design flaws and my poor handling, crapped out on me way too soon. This computer is a 64bit Windows 8.1 operating system with 500 available GB as the description states. The look of the computer is nice but nothing luxurious, it is lightweight in my opinion and may feel cheap depending on what you are used to handling, no it does not feel like a Mac but it doesn't feel like it will fall apart at any given moment either.
As for the performance of the operating system itself, it is decent and gets the job done. As military personnel I have had some issues with IE and accessing AKO sites because IE freezes up and shuts down, which has been the most frustrating issue in and of itself, however, once I got Firefox it all ran smoothly. I plan on uninstalling some of the bloatware dell offers on their computers, but even before doing so this computer runs just fine and gets the job done. I would recommend it for someone who wants to access the internet, check email, write documents and just perform the typical computer tasks with. I have had my moments of where the computer may seem to freeze up when in all actuality it is just taking longer than I would prefer it to in order to accomplish whatever task I have told it to do, but it is nothing that is such a problem I could not live with it or that I would return this at all.
Design: Very angular, all-black, minimalist design with no frills or embellishments.Top cover is textured to prevent finger marks. Weight: Seems quite light, much lighter than my previous Dell. Noise: Disk drive is whisper-quiet.You have to put your ear very close to hear it. Screen: Brightness is just OK in normal light. Sound: Volume is just OK. Keyboard: OK Performance:I have the Core i3 and 4 GB RAM.This is just about OK for most normal uses (Word, Excel, YouTube, etc.)If you want lightening response, go with the Core i5 and more RAM. LEDs:Has only one, which will show white if the laptop is plugged in AND charging; will show red if the battery is low, plugged in or not.Downside to this is that, if the laptop is closed AND not plugged in, you don't know if it is sleeping or off. This takes some getting used to.Can't think why Dell would want to save a dollar or two by eliminating the usual LEDs. Price: Got it purchased and delivered for $402.Not bad.
Would I buy it again?Hard to tell, since I haven't done a hands-on test with half a dozen competitors in order to make a comparison.Overall, for the price I am satisfied; and Dell has always been reliable for me.
UPDATE: Found a way to improve the sound: Go to "Dell Audio" and adjust the equalizer.I boosted the higher-frequency sounds, and the overall sound seems twice as good.Pity this control is somewhat hidden.

I bought this to replace my aging Dell Studio 1555, whose hinges actually just cracked yesterday, luckily I've had this Inspiron for about a month now, so it's no big deal.
For background, I'm a college student who rarely takes this computer outside of his room, I have yet to "travel" with it, but I'm sure it's solid enough for trips back home.
Pros: Solid CPU, nice keyboard, strong hinges, has decent build quality, lightweight, fairly quiet, clear bright display, decent battery life (about 3-4 hours web browsing)
Cons: Touchpad is a tad quirky, glossy plastic surrounding the ports (easily scratched), no Gigabit Ethernet (only Fast Ethernet, but no big deal, if you need it you can always get a USB 3.0 Gigabit adapter)
I've installed an SSD (it can take a 9mm SSD, just be careful when installing, since you have to negotiate around the touchpad cable, I think) and upgraded to 8 GB RAM.This machine runs Windows 8.1 very nicely and has everything I expected from it.The performance is pretty good, it runs a virtual machine with Windows 10 Preview fairly well, although it can be a tad slow (though it could be because the VM is running off my external hard drive, and also, having the virtualization technology is very nice).
Is this the most well built or well featured laptop on the planet? No, but it gets the job done for someone who needs a decent desktop replacement laptop that will last for at least four to five years (my typical PC usage cycle).
UPDATE (8/4/17) - So I've had this laptop for about three years now and there were two issues I figured I'd mention while writing the review.I run Kubuntu 17.04 (Linux) on this machine and I have been impressed with how it's still holding up very well over time. The first issue is the battery. This is common among laptops and I cannot fault the machine for its battery going south after three years, especially since I now bring it to and from my office everyday.I got a replacement on Amazon for $31 which should be arriving next week.
My other major gripe is that its keyboard is simply annoying to use sometimes.I've found that long sessions of typing can be painful and I blame that on the short key travel.I am probably in the minority of people who like chiclet keyboards generally, but I think the lack of key travel is just obnoxious.I bought a Logitech K360 today and have found it to be much more comfortable to use with this computer. However, on the go, this system's keyboard is fine (and a K360 is about as wide as the computer, so it's easy to travel with).
I got this laptop as a temporary one while I waited for my main laptop to be fixed. The plan was to then to give it as an eventual hand-me-down gift to my little brother. I couldn't give it to him though because honestly this is one of the worst laptops I've had to use. The build itself and feel of the laptop is fine, but when you turn it on, problems start.
The issue is how slow it is and its inability to "handle the weight" of Windows 8.1 apparently. There are several issues, including disappearing mice cursors from the screen, an insanely slow hard drive (which causes the computer to freeze for huge hefts of the time), and other general issues. To expound on the mice cursor issue, it's one of the most insidious of my problems. Often, the mouse will simply stop working. The mouse position is still being tracked, but clicking with it is possible. At that point you're forced to use the touch screen until you restart the computer. Changing settings on the computer, updating the drivers for the mouse, and plenty of other solutions have failed to fix my issue. The laptop in general feels slow and has issues rendering the Windows 8 Home Screen and navigating it. Attempting a search is a lost cause.
The PC is currently used for light (and I mean light) web browsing, Spotify, and Netflix. I wouldn't recommend it if you plan to do much more (trying to code on the laptop was a goal I failed to realize). I would recommend getting a different laptop if that's within budget. If not, a laptop without a touch screen at the same price likely has better specs to make your computer feel less like a brick.
I would be tempted to give it 2 stars since it's been okay for the few things I can do with it, but it dashed my expectations (which started low) by far too much.
Great starter laptop or as a general home/office laptop!I had pretty high expectations to begin with because I have been a Mac Pro user for many years. After my Mac of seven years needed replacement, I switched to PC to save a little money while paying back student loans. The two-finger scroll on the trackpad doesn't always work (or just suddenly stops), but that's usually fixed with a restart or closing of the program that it stopped on (which is a minor inconvenience, but can still be a pain).I haven't had any crashes or mystery screens yet, but I've only owned this laptop since September 2015.It has a nice matte finish with a tasteful texture to it that I love and the keyboard is very sleek (similar to Mac's keyboard design). The trackpad is a little loud to click, but that doesn't bother me.I don't use this computer much for anything aside from social media, Word products, online shopping, and internet research.I have, however, plugged it in to my television via HDMI and either it doesn't have this function or I don't know how to access it, but the screen doesn't go completely black when turning down the brightness (so I have to almost close it and face it away from me to avoid looking at something bright in a dark room if I'm watching a movie). It's relatively lightweight and vents from the side which is nice, so I can have it on my lap for a period of time without worrying that it will severely overheat.I don't use the touch screen much, but when I do it's surprisingly precise and easy to use.I haven't tried any games on it yet, but it doesn't have any trouble keeping up with 10+ internet tabs plus open Word programs and a music program/YouTube.I haven't owned a PC since 1998 and I had no trouble operating it in comparison to a Mac even with Windows 10.Fits easily into a backpack computer sleeve or laptop carrier without being too burdensome. The cord is long enough for me to sit just about anywhere in my living room with it plugged in.Startup is quick and easy so far.The price is right and this would be a great laptop for high school and college students or anyone wanting to own a home/office computer.3 stars!
The system configuration is inferior to that shown in the advertisement, but the notebook is in excellent condition and functioning. It's ok for the price.
